Microgrids that are integrated with distributed energy resources (DERs) provide many benefits, including high power quality, efficiency and low carbon emissions, to the grid. operated either in grid-connected or island modes running on different strategies. However, one of major technical issues a microgrid is unintentional islanding, where failure trip may lead serious consequences terms protection, security, voltage frequency stability, safety. Therefore, fast efficient islanding detection necessary for reliable operations. This paper provides an overview methods, which classified as local remote. Various methods each class studied, advantages disadvantages method discussed based performance evaluation indices such non-detection zone (NDZ), time, error ratio, quality effectiveness multiple inverter cases. Recent modifications using signal processing techniques intelligent classifiers also discussed. Modified passive addressing drawbacks getting more attention recently published works. comprehensive review will utilities researchers reference guideline select best their economic feasibility.
